Dating app Tinder announced the rollout of a new feature called Tinder Loops, which allows users to create looping GIFs for their profiles.

Tinder users can upload short videos (two seconds in length) to their profiles so they can “show more personality” than with photos alone, according to Tinder. When the company tested the feature earlier this year in Japan, Tech Crunch noted that people who added the Loops feature to their profiles were 10% more likely to receive a right swipe.

The feature also seems to increase the likelihood that people will communicate over the app. Tech Crunch also reported that users testing the feature saw their average conversation length increase by 20%.

Users are able to upload existing video from their phones and choose the section they want to include. They can choose “preview loop” to see what it looks like before they add to their profiles.

Users must create and edit the videos before uploading to Tinder, so if you want to add certain filters you can do this in advance. Loops doesn’t allow users to edit existing videos in-app, according to website The Verge.

Tech Crunch noted that the number of profile photos Tinder allows has expanded to nine, to encourage people to add looping GIFs without having to delete any photos they’ve already posted.

Tinder is rolling out new features in an effort to be taken as a more serious dating app. Many users have become frustrated with its “hook-up” reputation, especially female users, and are looking for more female-friendly apps. With features like Loops, Tinder is hoping to create more stickiness, increase conversations, and encourage people to get creative in order to attract potential matches.

Tinder is part of Match Group, who has acquired dating apps Hinge, PlentyofFish and OkCupid. The company seems to be positioning itself to compete against Facebook, which announced earlier this year that it would be entering the online dating industry with a new dating feature. No details have been revealed since the announcement.

While it is not available worldwide, Loops has rolled out in the following markets: the U.S., Canada, Japan, the UK, France, Korea, Canada, Australia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, Kuwait, New Zealand, Norway, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and United Arab Emirates.

The feature is currently only available in iOS devices. For more information on this dating service you can read our review of the Tinder app.
