The divide between dating and politics is getting smaller, especially since the 2016 election. Many American daters are opting to put the political beliefs of potential partners front and center when it comes to seeing if there’s a spark. And dating apps are noticing this trend, too.

In September, OkCupid announced its alliance with Planned Parenthood Federation of America to allow its customers to show their political leanings when it comes to female reproductive health. OkCupid is offering an #IStandWithPP badge that shows up on the profile of anyone who has publicly answered “no” to the question “should the government defund Planned Parenthood?” The app’s algorithms will also consider the badge when matching you with potential partners.

But users can choose to keep their feelings to themselves. “When you answer a question on OkCupid, you have the option to make your answer public or private,” Melissa Hobley, CMO of OkCupid, told website Bustle. “Only if you publicly answered that you support Planned Parenthood, then you receive the badge automatically. If you don't want the badge on your profile, then you can mark your answer as private.”

But it turns out OkCupid users are very interested in sharing their political leanings and are hoping to match with those who feel the same. And OkCupid users lean progressive. According to their stats, about 80% of OkCupid users support Planned Parenthood.

Other dating apps have tried to tap into the political divide, especially during the contentious 2016 election. There was an app created for Bernie Sanders supporters, and another created for Americans looking to date Canadians (and perhaps transfer their citizenship).

The Pro-Choice/ Pro-Life divide has been a deep political debate in America for decades. With the new administration, the debate has become more polarizing for many, with GOP congressional leaders threatening to defund Planned Parenthood with new proposed healthcare legislation, which would severely affect women’s overall healthcare, especially for low-income women.

Planned Parenthood is often caught in the middle of contentious political debate because it provides abortions. However, no federal funds that the organization receives are ever used for abortions. (Conservatives who speak out against the organization are typically doing so because they want government to restrict or ban abortion services.) But despite this political divide, the majority of Americans support Planned Parenthood because of the low-cost healthcare they provide to women, including mammograms and cervical cancer screenings, as well as providing contraception.

According to OkCupid, a day after the badge became available, almost 200,000 users had theirs prominently displayed. To show its support as a company, OkCupid has promised to match up to $50,000 dollars for every dollar donated to Planned Parenthood.
