Match Releases Ninth Annual 'Singles in America' Study

Match’s Singles in America survey, now in its ninth year, is the nation's largest and most comprehensive annual scientific study of single men and women across the United States. This year, Match polled over 5,000 singles about their current attitudes around sex and dating, the their response to the #MeToo movement, and how singles of all ages are changing the way they look for love.

"Modern love, sex and romance are thriving in America—from Millennials to seniors. The current fear that the young don’t care about love and commitment is just plain wrong. They are simply having a hard time finding it and feeling burnt out by the search,” says Dr. Helen Fisher, biological anthropologist and Chief Science Advisor to Match. “Moreover, this year’s Singles in America study gives a first-of-its-kind look at the positive impact the #MeToo movement has had on single men — on dates and in the office.”

Singles still want love and they’re optimistic about their chances of finding it. According to the survey:

  • 70% of Gen Z singles and 63% of Millennial singles say they’re searching for romantic love
  • 75% of Gen Z and 69% of Millennials believe they will find the kind of partner they want
  • Gen Z and Millennials went on an average of five first dates in 2018

In contrast, only 46% of older singles believe they will find what they’re looking for in a partner. They went on an average of two first dates in 2018.

Though they are romantic at heart, younger generations face challenges as they date. Many feel they must meet certain conditions before committing to a serious relationship. Forty percent of young singles feel they need self-acceptance before they seek love, 23% say they need to reach a certain point in their career, and 20% feel they must reach a certain income level - in fact, more than any other group in the study, one third of today’s young singles say their financial situation is hindering their pursuit of romance.

One of the biggest changes to the dating landscape is the spread of the #MeToo movement. Fifty-nine percent of today’s singles say the #MeToo movement is important to them and nearly half say it has sparked vital conversations. Men, particularly Millennial men, say the movement has changed how they behave at work, on social media, and on dates. Only 19% of men and 10% of women (14% of total singles) think the movement has made dating more challenging. Overall, most singles think #MeToo has had a positive impact on dating.
