Hornet Partners With Planned Parenthood And L.A. LGBT Center For Sexual Assault Awareness Month

With the explosion of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, there has never been a more public conversation around sexual assault, abuse and consent. Gay social network Hornet is the latest company to take a stand against sexual violence, partnering with Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles LGBT Center to support survivors and provide education for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

“Sex education is where sexual assault prevention begins, for all people — not just LGBTs,” says Sean Howell, President of Hornet. “The public deserves this kind of information. We must work to take care of our community and will continue to provide helpful information that gives the community skills to navigate healthy relationships, sex and consent.”

As the largest global LGBT newsroom, Hornet stands to play an important role in this initiative.

“The LGBTQ community faces higher rates of marginalization, poverty and stigma. These factors can leave the community vulnerable to sexual violence,” the company said in a post. “LGBTQ people also face higher rates of hate-motivated violence, which can sometimes take the form of sexual assault. In addition, despite marriage equality, LGBTQ relationships remain stigmatized, and the portrayal of them are often hypersexualized, which can lead to intimate partner violence stemming from internalized homophobia and shame.”

Intolerance faced by the LGBTQ community can make it more difficult for survivors to report assault. They are often hesitant to seek assistance from the institutions that are meant to help them - like hospitals, shelters, and police - over fears that they will not be treated fairly or with compassion. As a result, assaults are under-reported and survivors face a more challenging road to recovery.

Hornet hopes its partnerships with Planned Parenthood and the Los Angeles LGBT Center will make information about sex, consent and healthy relationships more accessible, and help facilitate a much-needed conversation.

The company kicked off the campaign with a series of blog posts about consent created in conjunction with Planned Parenthood:

The partnership also directs individuals toward the resources Planned Parenthood already offers, including an online video series that tackles important sex education issues.

“Sex education that includes information and skill building around consent is a critical tool to helping prevent sexual violence,” said Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “That’s why Planned Parenthood is working alongside… Hornet... to provide users with education and resources on how to communicate and practice consent in sexual situations. Everyone deserves to have consensual, safe, fun, and healthy sex and relationships.”

Bumble, Grindr, and OkCupid are also part of the initiative with Planned Parenthood to expand the dialogue around consent for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
