eHarmony Partners with Us Weekly to Offer Exclusive Discount

Are you an Us Weekly reader? If so, you’re in luck. The popular entertainment and gossip magazine just announced that eHarmony is offering its readers an exclusive discount of 20 percent when they join.

Us Weekly said the offer is for a “limited time only,” but didn’t state how long the promotion will last.

eHarmony is a longtime competitor in the online dating world, and one of the big selling points is its matching algorithm. Its success rate is notable. The service matches one couple every 14 minutes according to their website, and according to a survey from 2018, eHarmony is the number one trusted dating site brand. eHarmony is focused on appealing to more serious daters, as opposed to competitors like Tinder.

eHarmony partnering with Us Weekly, a celebrity tabloid, as a way to obtain new subscribers is an interesting choice, considering its target market.

There are no superficial swipes on eHarmony – the app goes much deeper than that. The company instead looks for compatibility ratios between users, based on a series of questions each member must answer in order to complete their profiles, which can take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete.

Instead of answering questions about what TV shows you like, eHarmony bases its matching on how you answer psychologically relevant questions, like what your passions are, whether or not you want children, the importance of certain characteristics in your partner, as well as your deal breakers. eHarmony assesses the answers with its “29 Dimensions of Compatibility” algorithm.

Part of the sign-up process also includes self-assessment questions about your weaknesses and flaws. Here’s the rub: the more honest you are with your answers, the more likely you’ll find the right match. eHarmony wants to point out that nobody is perfect and we all have faults when it comes to connecting with others. Being honest only helps match you with someone who is complementary to the type of person you are, flaws and all.

This long sign-up process has often been a complaint for online daters who are looking for a speedier, easy process. But eHarmony has stuck by its technology and process, claiming that the success rate for its users makes the extra effort worth the time (and money). eHarmony charges from $19.95 to $59.95 per month, depending on the subscription plan you purchase.

Last October, German media company ProSeiben acquired eHarmony to diversify from its commercial television franchise. The company already purchased dating app Parship, a brand similar to eHarmony that was developed in Germany.

eHarmony CEO Grant Langston remained in his position and is focusing on eHarmony’s approach to online dating and long track record of success as a competitive advantage. Facebook Dating has entered the market as a direct competitor, touting its service for more serious daters as well.
