Apply to Date Turns Online Dating Into ‘The Bachelor’

Worried about finding a date for your next event, a wedding, or even a dinner party? Apply to Date is a new dating platform that wants to help you put the word out, and like The Bachelor, encourages other seeking singles to compete for a chance to date you.

Similar to networking apps like LinkedIn, the platform lets you build a sharable web page (like a resume) that allows people to submit applications to date you. You can add your social media, including tweets, Instagram bios, and Snapchat stories on your webpage profile, according to website Mashable.

Apply to Date was created by Lucy Guo, who was looking for a date to her company’s office party and grew tired of swiping and messaging over apps like OkCupid and Tinder. Seeking a new strategy, she turned to her own personal networks, and eventually created a webpage asking people to submit their applications to go on a date with her. She was surprised when she received over 250 applications, and some from former friends she knew back in middle school.

"A huge differentiating factor was that it was a public online page anyone could see and share," she told Mashable. She saw a formula for success, that people in your network could in essence “put the word out” among their contacts, increasing your chances to secure a date.

The process for Apply to Date is very simple. When you go to their website, you can submit your email to sign up, or just start looking at web pages of featured profiles. Each profile includes an “Ask me out” button at the top, along with a few photos, a brief intro, background, and what exactly you’re looking for. You can also include links to your Instagram feed, SnapChat stories, or tweets, which appear at the bottom of your page.

There are concerns with this simple process, namely security. Most dating apps require users to register using Facebook or with their phone number as a verification, so that they can ensure you are a real person and not a bot. Users can also avoid sending their personal contact information, and instead message matches through the app. Apply to Date automatically shares personal email addresses when two users match, which means they could potentially be harassed or scammed.

As Mashable points out, Tinder users have experienced problems with “Tindstagramming” – where users receive Instagram DMs from Tinder profiles they swiped left on. In other words, people who have been rejected could lash out. This is the risk of including social media links via dating platforms.

Apply to Date launched in late February.
