I found an interesting report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project website. It breaks down the American population by generation and shows what percentage of them are online and what percentage each generation performs certain online activities. Here is a chart detailing the generations and their internet use:
Generation | Birth Years | Ages in 2009 | % Of Total Adult Population | % Of Internet Using Population |
---|---|---|---|---|
Gen Y (Millennials) | 1977-1990 | 18-32 | 26% | 30% |
Gen X | 1965-1976 | 33-44 | 20% | 23% |
Younger Boomers | 1955-1964 | 45-54 | 20% | 22% |
Older Boomers | 1946-1954 | 55-63 | 13% | 13% |
Silent Generation | 1937-1945 | 64-72 | 9% | 7% |
G.I. Generation | <1936 | 73+ | 9% | 4% |

They also listed 25 different online activities. The ones that relate to online dating and the visitors of this site included users of social networks (closest category to online dating), users who rate products and services and users who read blogs.
% of Online Users | |||
---|---|---|---|
Generation | of Social Networking Sites | Who Rate a Person/Product | Read Blogs |
Gen Y (Millennials) | 67% | 37% | 43% |
Gen X | 36% | 35% | 34% |
Younger Boomers | 20% | 29% | 27% |
Older Boomers | 9% | 30% | 25% |
Silent Generation | 11% | 25% | 23% |
G.I. Generation | 4% | 16% | 15% |

Not surprisingly, the younger you are the greater chance you have of being online and doing one of the above online activites. Social networking sites and online dating are very popular for people in the 18 to 44 age range but the age range of 45 to 54 is growing compared to other years. People in the age ranges that fall in the Gen X to the Silent Generation share a fairly similar pattern of people who like reading blogs and rating products.
