Dating app WooPlus has just launched a major update of its app with a new look, logo and user experience in February, and a month later, it was the number one trending dating app on Google Play as registrations jumped 50 percent.
The self-described “dating app for curvy people” announced version 5.0, which includes new updates to profiles, a dating “assistant” to help guide users, and a new feature to curb ghosting behavior. This was good timing for the company as people went into lockdown worldwide in the wake of the pandemic, and many people isolating alone were turning to dating apps to feel connected.
The new profile update is described in the company’s press release[*1] as “unfolding,” because users can spend time with each profile swiping through their photos to get to a description – and therefore get a better sense of who they are. The company said that it allows users to show themselves more vividly and let people get to know them instead of judging quickly and moving on.
The new dating assistant they’ve added is named Irene, and her purpose is to keep users informed and offer support through their “dating journey” on the app. And to address the ghosting problem so prevalent in dating apps, WooPlus now offers a 48-hour match countdown where they must reach out or the person disappears from their match list. This is to help users to “focus on quality matches over quantity,” according to the company’s press release.
WooPlus is a niche dating app for curvy daters and has become more popular in recent months, notably in March when over one week new registrations jumped 50 percent and it was the top trending dating app on Google Play. The company conducted a survey in January 2020 and found that 8 in 10 of its users have felt mainstream dating apps have a negative connotation with larger body types. Eighty-one percent of WooPlus users describe themselves as curvy and that potential partners on the app find them attractive, which is why they use it.
The app itself has made it a point to verify profiles to ensure they are real, something that has eluded many dating apps. The survey also showed that the loyalty customers feel towards WooPlus is based on the millions of matches the app has produced (many users are looking for long-term, committed relationships).
Neil Raman, founder and CEO of WooPlus, said in a statement:[*2] "We’ve recently updated our app to help users stay connected, make friends, enjoy dating, and find love, to help beat the loneliness associated with isolation. It's been incredible to see people interact and lift each other up and to feel supported during this time.”
He added: "Our aim is to help our community foster lively connections and strong relationships, during this time of crisis."
