Tinder has launched Tinder U in India, a new feature that connects college students attending the same school or other nearby universities.

According to Indian Express,Tinder U allows students with a valid school email address to opt in to the feature, which works as a dedicated space for college students to connect and search for other students with the same interests. Once a new user is verified through the app’s application process, they can populate their profiles with details like college clubs, sports, and other activities to make it easy to find matches and expand their circles – whether for friendship or dating.

Tinder U users can also add the year they graduate and their majors to spark interest with others in the same graduating year or program of study. Users can also “Superlike” someone who grabs their interest.

Participants in Tinder U can add the special Tinder U icon to their phone for easy access to the dedicated platform, according to Indian Express.[*1]

“University life is all about new experiences, and with Tinder U as your trusty sidekick—whether you’re looking for a study buddy, concert partner, or something a little more special—you can truly thrive,” Aditi Shorewal, Communications Lead for Tinder in India, said in a statement about the launch.

Dating apps are popular among young people in India and seem to be gaining ground, whereas among U.S. users, dating app usage has declined in the last several months.

According to Indian Express, a recent survey by OnePoll found that 57 percent of Indians ages 18 to 25 have found meaningful relationships through dating apps. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said they had dated someone they met on a dating app, and 55 percent said they became friends with someone they met this way.

In fact, 45 percent of respondents in this age category said they have most commonly met others through dating apps, compared to work and educational institutions at only 34 percent.

India remains a bright spot and growing market for Tinder as the company struggles to expand its userbase and more specifically, attract more paying users to its app.

“[Tinder U] offers Gen Z a safe and inclusive space where genuine connections happen as naturally as bumping into someone interesting in the library or in the corridor. We’re thrilled to empower university and college students to connect safely, authentically, and on their own terms,” added Shorewal in the press release about Tinder U.
