Netflix dropped its first trailer for the new series The Ultimatum: Queer Love, which will premiere on the streaming service in May.
The trailer is a departure from the original Ultimatum series because all of the couples on the new dating reality show are LGBTQ+ for the first time. According to The Pink News[*1] , the new series promises to “showcase more stories of love, relationships and the ups and the downs of commitment” with “brutal honesty” as each couple hits a crossroads in their relationship.
Notably, as show creator Chris Coelen promised last year, this installment would feature “an all-queer cast made up of women and non-binary people.”
The premise of Queer Love however is the same as the original – one partner wants to make things official and get married while the other has doubts. The show brings them together with other couples questioning their commitment (and who also happen to be compatible with other contestants), so they can test the waters and decide if they want to commit to each other or possibly start a new romance.
Another notable change to the show according to NBC News[*2] is that Nick and Vanessa Lachey won’t be hosting. Instead, actor JoAnna Garcia Swisher assumes the role as she helps the audience navigate the drama as the couples work through their decisions to stay or go.
Things get heated in the trailer, with couples breaking apart and getting emotional over the pressure of making a choice. Others find new romance with other contestants, which causes added drama for the original couples to navigate. “You came here with an ultimatum. You knew what you wanted. And I don’t,” says one contestant at a lavish dinner. Another says: “Let me find somebody who’s ready,” asking her partner to move on.
“You said you wanted to marry me, but you fell in love with someone else in a week and a half,” says another contestant.
The teaser starts with a contestant quipping: “I don’t even want to say her name anymore, she’s like Voldemort to me.”
Coelen told NBC News: “What’s fascinating is when you actually look at the reasons that people give for not being ready, there are a multitude of reasons: ‘I come from a family background of bad relationships. I don’t want to repeat my past,’ or, ‘I’m not ready, I’m too young,’ or, ‘I need to be financially stable.’”
Pink News notes that there’s already a fan base, with one sharing on social media: “I’m so here for The Ultimatum: Queer Love. I’m excited for her to see why this representation is not only important, but equally entertaining!”
The Ultimatum: Queer Love premieres on Netflix on May 24th.
