The numbers of people in India turning to online dating has soared since the start of the pandemic. As they have been forced to stay at home and limit their interactions, many are trying dating apps for the first time to connect and meet new people.

Dating app QuackQuack[*1] has been one of the fastest-growing dating apps in India, though it competes with giants like Hinge, Tinder and Bumble who are pouring resources into marketing efforts in the country. Still, QuackQuack saw a 300 percent increase in sign-ups that took their user base to 11 million in 2020, mostly due to people in smaller cities and towns eager to try the service.

In fact, over seventy percent of new sign ups on QuackQuack in 2020 were from smaller cities and towns, a change from previous years. Over the past year, they added 3.4 million new users according to India New England News.

The dating app company also studied 50,000 of their users over the course of three months to understand online dating trends as we enter the new year. Arguably, the pandemic in 2020 has upended dating, with people looking to dating apps more than ever, and also becoming more serious about their searches, so it’s hard to tell what might happen once the majority of the population gets vaccinated and COVID is behind us.

QuackQuack’s research found that the average age of its users is now 25, down from 29 a few years back. This reflects the changing population in India, and the large number of Gen Z users who are flocking to dating apps to meet people.

Women in India have also begun to embrace online dating more than ever. QuackQuack witnessed a 12 percent increase in women signing up during the lockdowns. Notably, women open the app 48 times per day, twice as much as men who use the app. As social distancing continues, it’s expected that more women will adapt to online dating as a primary way of meeting people.

QuackQuack noticed that users have turned to dating apps for video chats too, from 350,000 to 500,000 per day. In fact, the video chat is one of the most-used features on dating apps this year, which is why many scrambled to add the feature to their platforms, including Tinder and Hinge. At the start of the pandemic, daters were turning to third party apps like Facetime or WhatsApp for virtual dates.

Other interesting findings:

  • The average amount of time a user spends on the app is eleven minutes, indicating that people are more serious about finding someone.
  • QuackQuack noticed a 25% increase in profile views overall this year.

“2020 has been the year when virtual dating was accepted by masses among the desi singles,” QuackQuack founder Ravi Mittal told India New England News. “We witnessed participation from people of all age groups and geographies. What’s pleasing to see was the huge growth in participation of users from small towns & cities and in the near future we are expecting the number to shoot up even further.”
