Fourplay, a new dating app that lets friends create joint profiles and go on group dates with their matches, has become a hit in the New York dating scene. The app now boasts a waiting list of 9,000 people.
According to The New York Post[*1] , the app was created by two friends who were healthcare workers and didn’t have much time to devote to their jobs, friends, and the dating scene, so Danielle Dietzek and Julie Griggs decided to create a profile together on a dating app and look for matches who were willing to recruit their friends and go out all together on a double date. (Hint: they got a lot of positive responses which led to the idea for the app.)
The way Fourplay works is two friends set up a joint profile and then match with other pairs of daters. When there is a match, the four proceed to a group chat. The idea is to take the pressure and awkward conversation off of first dates, which can often be more stressful than fun, to make it a more engaging, communal experience. If there’s no romantic connection, then at least everyone got to spend time with friends, and maybe make new ones.
“We very intentionally designed Fourplay so that all matches happen as a group and there’s no one-on-one dating to mitigate the pressure and anxieties that come with dating,” Griggs told The Post.
The app launched before the pandemic but the creators haven’t really marketed it until now, as the pandemic put a wrench in the IRL group dating concept. It is available for iOS users and will eventually also be available to Android users.
Fourplay is now in its pre-seed round of investing. There are currently 11,000 active users in the New York area (plus the additional 9,000 on the wait list), and Dietzek and Griggs hope to launch it nationwide and then go global.
Dietzek noted that the app is a bit of a throwback to pre-online dating, where people met at bars and through friends instead of online. They expect this type of nostalgia to catch on with users who have become weary of the online dating experience, and hope to become the next Hinge or Bumble for a new generation. (Dietzek and Griggs are both in their twenties, a prime demographic who is looking for a new dating app experience.)
The app is designed to fill “an untapped market that singles don’t even realize they need,” Dietzek told the NY Post.
