Drew Barrymore quipped that she was “going off” dating apps after being catfished by a man who claimed to be an NFL quarterback.
According to US Weekly, the actress revealed the story on The Drew Barrymore Show in late January. She noted that he messaged her saying he was the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams.
She told her audience that she was excited to meet because she was a football fan, messaging him that she went to the team’s first practice game. She also wrote that she was “frustrated being a girl from Los Angeles who loves football” at a time when L.A. didn’t have any teams, and now they have two.
It was then that the match messaged her back admitting that he was not a football player at all, but instead a musician. She wasn’t amused.
“How should I feel about this?’ she asked the audience.
According to Buzzfeed, her cohost responded: “you should feel lied to, robbed. I had a fantasy you’d be like the new Taylor Swift and you’d be at games.” In an earlier episode in late 2023, the actress spoke about how Swift’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce was inspiring, and showed her that she could perhaps just go on a date and not “overthink it.”
Barrymore also noted that the man began his messages with “Hey Drewski,” a nickname she hated.
She responded by looking into the camera on the set of her show and said: “I hate you. You pithy, deceiving, playful [man],” according to US Weekly[*1] .
She admitted that the whole interaction made her feel “stupid” and annoyed, and that she wished they hadn’t gotten off on the wrong foot.
While not all of her experiences have included catfishing, the actress also admitted that she doesn’t go on dating apps for long. “Every time I get there, it does not feel great,” she admitted on the show. “I always last five days,” then she quits.
She goes on to say: “…my app has changed where it shows people like you so it’s very flattering…but I don’t know who anyone is, and it just feels scary to go out with a stranger.”
Barrymore said she told him she was going to the Superbowl, figuring that maybe they could meet until the musician admitted he was joking with her.
Fans were quick to post comments in support of Barrymore, adding that they’d been through their own dating app woes.
