Chispa, Match Group’s dating app for Latino singles, has launched a summer college tour for select cities, in partnership with Sorry Papi. The tour is aimed at building community and awareness of the app among young college students, the target demographic for the app.
Each event features music, dancing, and opportunities for people to connect on the Chispa platform, according to the company's press release[*1] . In fact, those logging onto the dating app during the tour will have a chance to win a trip for two to Puerto Rico or Baja with Sorry Papi.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to team up with Chispa," said Jaqueline Terrazas, Tour and Project Manager at Sorry Papi. "Together, we are bringing together communities in a way that celebrates our heritage and creates lasting memories."
According to the release, the tour kicked off in Salt Lake City, and will also include Louisville, Cincinnati, Champaign, Minneapolis, Dallas, Anaheim, and Sacramento.
Sorry Papi is an event company focused on cultural celebration specifically for the Latino community and with its planning will bring themes of empowerment and inclusivity to the tour.
The move comes as parent company Match Group has struggled with declining downloads and new users for its star app Tinder. But the company has noticed an uptick of interest in niche dating apps that target specific markets, such as Chispa for Latino singles, as daters look for more curated experiences on dating platforms.
Gen Z has been a particular target for the dating app company, especially since younger singles have shown less interest in dating apps than their older Millennial counterparts. And while certain events like the Olympics are driving them back to these apps for the short term, the longer-term prospects for one-size-fits-all platforms like Tinder are becoming less appealing.
Not so with apps that have a smaller database of users to choose from – like Chispa and BLK, aimed at Black singles.
In-person events are also a preference among Gen Z singles. Many are turning to running clubs and singles events like speed dating to meet people, and dating apps are responding like Chispa, and creating their own events to drive engagement on their apps. Match Group’s Tinder has created running clubs in London and New York, for example.
"We are excited to partner with Sorry Papi for this exhilarating summer college tour," said Julia Estacolchic, Chispa's Head of Brand. "This collaboration represents a perfect synergy between the number one dating app made for Latinos and Sorry Papi's dedication to creating spaces where cultural pride and celebration thrive.”
