Not getting vaccinated could cost you a date!

A new study by dating app Bumble found that getting vaccinated is a priority for singles, and if you don’t, it could cost you a date.

The dating app company surveyed about 1,000 of its American users in May and found that 30 percent said they wouldn’t consider going on a date or having sex with someone who wasn’t vaccinated. Bottom line: if you’re holding out, you might also be missing out on your love life.

According to Fast Company[*1] , the vast majority of respondents – 90 percent - want to date face-to-face, though Bumble maintains that many people like virtual dating as a way to determine whether or not to meet someone in person, so people will continue using this feature. Thirty-eight percent of respondents agreed that they prefer a virtual first date before meeting in person. Forty-six percent of users said they would be fine with a “normal” date and another 41 percent said they’d still want to keep socially distanced.

Interestingly, the app also shared that it has seen higher recent growth in areas where vaccination rates are higher.

Bumble and other dating apps have partnered with the US government and other governments around the world to encourage their users to get vaccinated. Bumble offers badges for users to let others know their vaccination status, as well as perks for those who choose to use the badges, like free access to premium services.

The pandemic has changed attitudes towards dating in general. According to Bumble, 65 percent of users feel it’s possible to fall in love with someone without meeting in person, a drastic change from before the pandemic began. Thirty-nine percent feel that ghosting, a major problem with online dating, has declined over the past year, and another 31 percent feel that catfishing has also declined since the start of the pandemic.

Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd said the survey will help the company better tailor its service as dating app customer preferences change. “Over the course of the pandemic, we’ve remained intently focused on listening to our community to understand how their needs have evolved and we have continued to innovate our product to meet that demand,” she said.

Meeting someone over a dating app in general seems to be losing its stigma. A vast majority - Ninety-one percent of respondents - said they were fine with meeting someone via a dating app, a sharp change from even two years ago. The pandemic definitely shifted attitudes as more people than ever signed up for dating apps and tried virtual dating.

The survey was commissioned by Bumble and conducted by research company Censuswide.
