Bumble announced it has added ID Verification in addition to other new safety-related features to attract singles back to its app.

The new verification feature lets users submit a photo of a government-issued ID to prove they are who they say they are, and then they can earn a verified badge for their profile, according to Tech Crunch.

The female-centered app is appealing its core demographic with the announcement – focusing on its female clientele who are looking for more safety features on dating apps. ID Verification is available in 11 countries, including the U.S., U.K., Australia, France and India. The company intends to roll out in more countries in the coming months, according to The Seattle Times[*1] .

The new feature is optional, so users can filter matches to look only for ID-Verified profiles, and they can request that their matches complete the verification process.

The company has also added a function similar to Tinder’s Share My Date feature called Share Date, which lets users share details about their dates and upcoming meet-ups with their friends and family. In addition, Bumble is expanding a safety feature to all chats, not just those already going in Conversations, that flags lude or inappropriate messages before a user is able to send. The new Review Before You Send reminds senders to edit flagged messages before sending, according to The Seattle Times.

A recent Bumble study surveying Gen Z singles found that 80 percent were more likely to go on a date with someone who was ID-verified, so safety is on the minds of their target market.

Safety on dating apps has been an issue for a while. Bumble’s new features come at a time when Tinder is under fire for allowing users to stay on its apps even after they were reported for abuse and sexual assault.

Overall, trust in dating apps has decreased as AI-enhanced profiles have misled many singles – with many users opting to touch up their photos or have a chat bot write their profiles. Scammers have also taken advantage of AI technology, and catfishing - or putting up fake profiles in order to scam other users – has increased.

Bumble has appointed its founder Whitney Wolfe-Herd back in the CEO position, and she appears to be focusing on safety as a top priority to attract people back to the app. Bumble has had a rough year since pivoting from its female-empowering brand identity of “women make the first move” to giving them the option of letting men make the first move. The company has also come under fire for a misguided marketing campaign and lagging revenue.
