The old dating profile cliche is "I like long walks on the beach..." It's one of those things that everyone tells you that you shouldn't say. But what if you DO like long walks on the beach? How do you say that in your profile without being horribly cliched? And what about all those other cliches? Is there a way to breathe new life into them?
Let's take a look at some old cliches and how to rewrite them to work for your dating profile:
I like long walks on the beach...
"I grew up on Cape Cod, so I've always felt at home with the sand between my toes and water lapping at my feet."
"I'm a city boy, but now that I live so close to the water, I've fallen in love with the sound of the waves."
I'm as comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt as I am in my finest clothes.
"My wardrobe is a mix of business suits and rock band t-shirts. I can't go to a concert without picking up a souvenir."
"My friends joke that I dress like a man in the winter and a woman in the summer. But what can I say? I love sundresses when it's hot and I hate my legs being cold when it's 40 degrees out. It just works for me, y'know?"
I know how to treat a man/woman.
"Looking for a girl who wants to blow your head off in Halo one day and bake you a pie the next? That's me!"
"I'm the one my friends turn to when they need someone to listen and give good advice."
I love life!
"I hate 'down days.' I feel like a day spent sitting on the couch is a day wasted, so I'm always trying to find something fun and exciting to do."
"I'm so grateful for all the opportunities I've had in my life and looking for ways to give back to people who haven't had it as lucky as me."
I want someone with a good sense of humor.
"I'm looking for the kind of guy who finds Will Ferrell hilarious. I can watch his Saturday Night Live clips a thousand times and still hurt myself laughing."
"My favorite people are the ones with a dry sense of humor - you know, the kind of person who makes a joke with a completely straight face and only two people in the room crack up laughing while the others have to think first? That's my favorite kind of humor."
I want someone who can teach me new things.
"I've always wanted to do something extreme like bungee jump or skydive, but none of my friends are adventurous enough to do it."
"Camping has always intrigued me, but my parents were very much the 'indoor' type so I never went as a kid. Is it too late for me to be a newbie camper at 30?"
So... you can write about cliched things, just find a Unique To You way of saying them. That's the key to writing a profile that attracts interest... and dates!
