OKCupid has released some interesting detailed reports and stats about their members. It looks like a member of Plenty of Fish (see the blog[*1] ) is following suit by using a built in tool on PlentyofFish to check out the different demographics based on an interest you can type in. This tool is intended to inform potential Advertisers of Plenty Of Fish on what type of people use the site, so they can better target their ads.
POF will return a percentage result for the following attributes for any interest. This information is compiled straight from the members dating profiles and the percentages are based on the answers members have chosen for each profile attribute.
The tool is suppose to show you:
if there are significant differences amongst gender, age, income, etc... and in turn the user's propensity to engage with that particular interest.
I took the common interest Movies, and inputted it into the tool. Some interesting results were shown. According to POF 86% of Males and 116% of Females are interested in Movies. I am not sure how an answer greater than 100% can be returned? Maybe it counts someone double if they mention an interest more than once and/or maybe this tool is based not just on the list of interests you can specify in your profile, but on your description as well? I am just speculating here but I am not sure how well this tool works. 32 of the listed 72 different attributes are over 100% for the interest Movies. I think something is broken with the tool, unless I am completely missing something about how the results are returned. To further confuse things, beside each answer on the results page, it also states "(expected is 100%)", I don't quite know what to make of that either. You would think an expected answer would be between 0 and 100%.
I tried other interests like Wii and Sex and I was given similar results with many of the attributes over 100%.
