There are so many mistakes that people make in their online dating profiles when it comes to content, but did you know you may be losing out on potential dates because of common grammatical errors? This fact goes double if you're looking for a brainy match - let's face it, we brainiacs are picky people!
Double check your profile to be sure you don't make these silly mistakes:
ITS vs IT'S
WRONG: I love my car because its something I worked on a long time.
RIGHT: I love my car because it's something I worked on a long time.
Tip: Use IT'S to replace IT IS, but for nothing else.
There, their, they're
WRONG: Their is something great about redheads.
RIGHT: There is something great about redheads.
WRONG: My kids love there swimming pool.
RIGHT: My kids love their swimming pool.
WRONG: I like to go to they're house to play Rock Band.
RIGHT: I like to go to their house to play Rock Band.
Tip: Use THEIR to describe possession and THEY'RE to replace THEY ARE.
YOUR vs YOU'RE
WRONG: I love that your a fun person to be around.
RIGHT: I love that you're a fun person to be around.
Tip: Use YOU'RE to replace YOU ARE, but for nothing else.
THAN vs. THEN
WRONG: I've always been more adventurous then my brother.
RIGHT: I've always been more adventurous than my brother.
Tip: Use THAN to compare things.
OF vs. HAVE
WRONG: I could of gone back to college, but chose to work instead.
RIGHT: I could have gone back to college, but chose to work instead.
Tip: This is one of those speech quirks that has worked its way into writing. It should always be COULD HAVE, WOULD HAVE, SHOULD HAVE.
LOOSE vs. LOSE
WRONG: It seems I'm always loosing my way when I try to drive without my GPS.
RIGHT: It seems I'm always losing my way when I try to drive without my GPS.
Tip: Think of loose has having a loose keyboard that slips in the extra O. Sounds goofy, but it works!
AFFECT vs. EFFECT
WRONG: Sappy movies always effect me.
RIGHT: Sappy movies always affect me.
Tip: An EFFECT is a result of an AFFECT.
Don't forget, it's always a good idea to run your profile through your favorite word processor's spelling and grammar check before you publish it! Happy dating!
