Online dating is the classic double-edge sword. On one hand, it opens up your dating pool exponentially. Potential partners could be anywhere in the world, and you can surf those infinite matches from the comfort of your couch (preferably while wearing PJs and tucking into your favorite comfort food).
Then there’s the other hand. The PJs are on. You’re curled up on the couch. A package of Oreos awaits. You grab your phone, start browsing and BOOM, there it is: one of these 4 abysmal profiles. Swipe left as fast as your fingers will allow.
#1 The Blank Page
You can tell this person is serious about dating because they’ve taken the time to fill out 0% of their profile. If you’re lucky, they’ll have managed to squeeze out a word or two (then again, “lucky” depends on exactly what those words are). And the profile picture? Not there either, or an obvious stock photo, or a pet, or a coffee machine. Nothing you want to spend Saturday night with, unless the pet is really cute.
#2 The Oversharer
Meet the opposite of the blank page. This person shares everything on their profile, ranging from the slightly-taboo (political leanings), to the depressing (sob story of the last breakup), to the crude (a bullet point list of sexual fetishes). Honesty is the best policy, and those are all important things to share with a partner at some point, but an online dating profile is never the place to do it. As soon as you see “My b**** girlfriend broke my heart so I decided to try this online dating thing,” head for the digital hills.
#3 The Fake
Whoa, Pamela Anderson’s on this dating site?? Hate to break it to you, but you’re not about to score a date with a Baywatch babe. A scammer stole her picture and is trying to pass it off (poorly) as their own. And all those pics of model-quality girls posing in lingerie? Probably not real either. More scammers, or bots, or fake profiles created by the dating service to make their user base look bigger.
#4 The One With Weird Pictures
A picture is worth a thousand words, and in this case, all of those words are “No.” Why are they holding a weapon and wearing a top hat? Why did they take a selfie at a funeral? Why are they riding a motorcycle while dressed in a sheet toga and smoking a joint? On second thought, all of those questions are better left unanswered. There’s a chance this person just has a quirky personality, but also a chance that they’re a psycho… if you have even the smallest doubt that it might be the latter, swipe left and don’t look back.
