POF is a pretty hard environment for women to present themselves in a favourable light. As such, it's unlikely that there are very many men using that site for potential long term relationships. Even guys that are thinking long term will avoid using the site because they assume MOST guys are mostly using the site for "dating" only. POF is fine for dating ... buts lets be honest, MOST guys will NOT consider women in that environment to be suitable for real relationships. I'm not saying anything bad about women that use the site, it's just the environment ... guilty by association.

POF is also a high volume environment, which means, in order to make the long term potential cutoff, a women has to be that much better to get past the negative environment.

There are no shortage of decent guys passing thru POF. However they are usually on and off in a matter of weeks as the environment doesn't offer what they want. MOST women simply check their email and do nothing else. If women don't actively search and approach, they're going to miss those guys and end up picking the best from the leftovers.

I wouldn't recommend POF for guys they actually have something to offer and are considered decent catches.

There is a very significant amount of false male competition there as well. If you are a guy that actually has all "his ducks in a row", you will be competing against guys who don't, but just BS their way through it in their profile. I found women on the site have a very hard time passing on the "bait and switch" trick. I think that saids a lot about the objective of women that use the site. They are primarily looking for guys at the top of their range of attraction, yet women don't realize that guys that bring all that to the table are simply NOT going to state that in the profile ... as it attracts the wrong type of women.

I would guess most people (male/female) that meet from the site, are little more than two illusions meeting ... and then each person deciding the other doesn't validate their own illusion. It goes something like this ... "You didn't lie well enough about your FAKE awesomeness, so I can't continue seeing you, because it would mean I'm not as awesome as I pretend to be either."

I agree... but I must say that POF is not a good place for quality dates. Years ago when I was on it, I was shocked at the no-class statements and behaviour from its members. And I am a man. Unfortunately, I end it up on Match.com and found several good prospects. But it took browsing many thousands of profiles and quite a few e-mails to weed out the fluff. I noticed a marked difference on members attitude and quality as soon as fees are involved. I am not saying that ALL members are better just because they pay, but the percentages of serious daters are significant enough to make it worthwhile. And the education, profession embracing percentage is quite a bit higher on pay-per-use sites. Not sure why. And yes, I ended up being married to my match. Regretfully, I did not pay attention to the small signals I got in the initial barrage of e-mails that followed my initial contact with her. Had I investigated further and ask for a full past history(she was married before and had a roving "winking" eye) I probably would have avoided the present re-occurring past issues.
So "buyer beware" is valid in this arena as well. There are no short-cuts for doing the home work required to find ALL you can about your prospects. Go slow and stay WIDE awake.

What The...re "Illusions"

I have to commend this author for a very astute defination of POF women....I've had everyone tell me I look better than my picture eat my food, drink my wine and disappear...The POF Profiles are nice Advertising pieces, like the feathers on a peacock but with a few shiny baubles added to attract a mate!...

Some POF fish have the attention span of a Goldfish (a proven fact: the Goldfish has a 3 second attention span) Oooooo look at the pretty picture…then on to the next pretty picture...well, you get the picture!

Too many of the women are very shallow and legends in their own showers....I had a woman ask if I had a picture without a hat...I looked at her profile and she had 3 pics with different men.....I ask if she had a pic without a man!!!

Goldfish...mostly...However, I am dating a woman I met who is very legit, mature, intelligent and successful in government...A Real Catch....just beware of way too many minnows.....this pool needs more chlorine!!

I have read this review and the others and commend you on your observations! I still have not decided what the BEST DATING options for women in 2009 are? Truely are there any other REAL options available for women? I have only subscribed to Match.com several years ago and found it enlightening but also dissappointing in ways. I met several well educated, responsible men just not compatible. It was very time consuming and required excessive amounts of time emailing trying uncover serious relationship candidates. In addition I had to "block" several stalker types. I dated a man my age off and on for a few years and we were both relationship minded but incompatible in the end. Call me nieve but what I discoverd through research was that the man I dated who claimed to be searching for a long term relationship has been utilizing Match.com for years, along with POF and numerous other web sites. I find this to be a common trait of men? I have since gone back onto match.com recently just searching and low and behold find the same men that appeared on the site when I started back in 2005 and a few I had dated. I concluded that these men too had not found what they were looking for or were simply using the site for "dating" only. So my question is WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALL THESE SITES? WHAT IS A GIRL TO DO FOR DATING OPTIONS? Seriously I cannot be only woman who is alone in this quest for a quality person? I am an attractive 45 year old woman who has a successful career and is completing a BA? Again if someone out there has a SOLUTION, I would welcome the advice.

Agree, I am a 58 yr old professional lady who moved to a rural area, and live in a mid size -- very conservative - clicky town. So my options are very limited, to find that special, true man

who is serious about having a relationship with a mature woman. Even if you find mature men on any site. they want women 10-20 yres younger!. What are we, women to do?? I may try the Christian sites, even though I do not consider myself religious, but open minded and Spiritual. Pleae advise!!

Understanding motivators. People(women) are just a picture on the screen. What would motivate guys to take any action whatsoever. There are only two motivators I know strong enough to do that. One is money and the other is NOT love.

Sure, at times, there may be a good connection based on picture alone, but that would be rare and require fairly stellar looks ... AND it would have to be a two-way thing. That's statistically rare based on pictures alone.

So, certainly, "not love" is the primary motivator 99% of the time. Since that's the motivator, that's also likely to be the outcome of a lot of dates ... since the decision must have necessarily already been made.

That's not a good scenario for long term ... it's a little hard to get past that one.

You could day the same is true in real life, but you would be wrong. Making a connection in real life may required sexual attraction/desire but it certainly isn't the primary motivator, there are many other attractants.

To believe there may be some women on dating sites, that are NOT affected by this like everyone else, would also require belief many other fairy tales. It's part of the human condition.

WHAT should women do instead?

Get yourself out in the real world were demonstrating you are a selective women is much easier. On dating sites most women will simply jump from short term to short term relationships at best. Most guys would likely not want to be anything other than your next playmate, if that.
